German veterans Stormwitch are back with their 10th release, titled Season of the Witch, now arriving 30 years since their debut Walpurgis Night. Though they've had numerous line-up changes over the years, the current roster of Andy Mück (Vocals), Stoney Stoner (Guitars), Volle Schmietow (Guitars), Jürgen 'Wanschi' Wannenwetsch (Bass), and Micha Kasper (Drums) has been together now for a bit, and the tightness of this latest incarnation shows here. This is solid, enjoyable melodic heavy metal, the band still delivering their early '80s classic metal and NWOBHM styled music for those who can't get enough of the vintage sounds of that era. Lots of crunchy riffs, tasty lead guitar solos, and soaring vocals on tracks such as "At the End of the World", "The Harper in the Wind", and "Evil Spirit", while "The Singer's Curse", which clocks in at nearly 9-minutes, picks up the pace and approaches classic Judas Priest styled intensity, complete with plenty of twin guitar mastery.
Season of the Witch delivers the goods as far as providing for enjoyable, classic metal entertainment. While the album doesn't break any new ground or stand out as 'essential' listening, it's clearly something to recommend to anyone who cherishes the early '80s heavy metal scene.
