PerformArt: The Art Of Falling In And Out The Circle Of Time

The fine line between expression and indulgence. The freedom from constraints and expectations. The ability to perform art, or in this case PerformArt.

Improvisation and expressive opportunities is what The Art Of Falling In And Out The Circle Of Time is all about. Twelve pieces which organically came together from the hands of Andrea Guariso (guitars, percussion and effects) and Claudio Nicola (bass and effects), take you on what feel like extremely personal, if confusingly unstructured journeys. This is the sound of two musicians sparking off each other and not caring for genre. You could call it Avantgarde, you could call it Progressive, or Jazzy in the freest form of settings. Randomly placed noises could also be apt. Yet it's none of those things and all of them. Intensely engaging in places, obtusely off hand in others, even instantly forgettable at times, in that, "oh, I forgot that was playing" kind of way. All three states can appear one after the other, with an immediacy that the sounds created never have.

It's to be applauded in scope, vision and skill and yet how genuinely engaging is it for those who weren't part of the creative process? The answer is the same; intensely in places, far from it in others. Easy to admire, difficult to use the word "enjoy" about. In terms of its ethos, this album is a resounding success, to the extent that it can't be bettered. However its ethos was to satisfy its creators and as such it has little intentional interest in exciting potential listeners.

Attend a show where a full 60 minutes or so of improvised fare is laid out in front of you and there's a fair chance you'd be impressed and caught in the moment. Take it home and other and than a few sparks of the wonder, the effect would be lost. As it is here. PerformArt are to be admired and I hope they continue to make music which satisfies their musical souls. Asking it to satisfy others to the same degree is another thing entirely.
