It was in the year 2007 that the Swedish heavy metal group Trial got going, and Vessel is their second full length album. This follows 2011's traditional metal album The Primordial Temple, and the band's aim was to create something different this time. Trial aren't your typical metal act fixated on one style but several metal subgenres, as there is variety to found with Trial's entertaining material on Vessel. Influence wise King Diamond/Mercyful Fate is clearly in the mix on a song such as "A Ruined World" and Trial's vocalist also hits his high notes.
This album is somewhat of a grower as I found the appeal increased with each listen, and those initial hesitations were soon forgotten. Title track "Vessel" is quite a slow and powerful doom like opener that doesn't hang around too long before Trial crank it up with "To New Ends". There are seven tracks in total some of which are quite extensive, such as when Trial bring Vessel to a strong conclusion with the song "Restless Blood". This is Vessel's longest inclusion, and one where Trial keeps you guessing as to what's up next due to the adventurous mix of tempo, style and potency. If I had to pick my standouts on Vessel the shape shifting metal of "Where Man Becomes All" would surely rate a mention, and thanks to songs like this I will be keen to sample any follow up releases from Trial.
