Scanner is one of those band who kind of exist on the periphery of most people's consciousness given their ever changing team sheet and tendency to disappear for extended periods. The judgment is in fact their first album since 2002's Scantropolis and is therefore the first to feature vocalist Efthimios Ioannidis who has actually been in place for over a decade.
The Judgement is a solid speed metal album. It resolutely sticks within the confines of the speed metal genre circa 1986 which, to be fair, is seldom a bad thing however, the one time they stray into the realm of power metal things pick up immeasurably. That track is the seven minute plus "Battle of Poseidon" which is resolutely excellent in every imaginable way and is certainly different enough to stand out. The rest of the record is entirely satisfactory but it leaves me wondering if Scanner can produce a magnificent epic like "Battle of Poseidon", why can't they do it more often?
