Kruger: Adam and Steve

The cover art on this album, a big red apple with the letters "a" and "s," reminds me a little of Andy Warhol's banana picture on that famous Velvet Underground album. As everyone knows, fruit holds tremendous symbolic power, evoking ideas that range from religious teachings to sexual provocations. I won't go on about any of these things, but I suspect the cover art here was meant to get viewers thinking.

As for the music, it's mostly a blend of metal and hardcore. The band does a good job of staying true to the hardcore sound and ethos while writing songs that are accessible enough to gather even more listeners around them. Don't get me wrong—this band is not compromising in some sort of ploy for popular appeal. My point is that the music exists on the cusp of hardcore and metal, the place where people can listen without feeling claustrophobic.

To me, the best thing about this album is its overall energy. I've never seen Kruger live, but I can almost picture these guys on stage, pushing their audience and never letting up. Kruger's been going strong for over 13 years and, with 5 albums now available, have a good body of work for fans to enjoy. As for me, I liked the shorter tracks. Some of the longer ones go on too long or venture into dissonance that just didn't work as well as it should have (I'm thinking of "Charger").

Track Listing:
1. Bottoms Up
2. Discotheque
3. Adam and Steve
