Orden Ogan: Ravenhead

From the opening bars of eponymous instrumental, "Orden Ogan", until the last note of "Too Soon", this album provides a clear, unadulterated, enjoyable batch of power metal goodies. In many ways Ravenhead reminds me of Grave Digger with smoother vocals. Does this song require bagpipes? Yes! Fetch! Does this song absolutely have to feature Grave Digger's Chris Boltendhal? Yes! Get him down here now! Massive choir? Get em' in here immediately! Would "Sorrow Is Your Tale" benefit from Joacim Cans helping out? Yes! Get on the horn to Sweden then! Can we make "Too Soon" into a HammerFall style ballad where we can use the glitterball and effects in the live environment? Yes! Do it now!

Guitarist/ vocalist Seeb Levermann provides most of the songwriting, however, the rest of the band (Tobin Kersting-guitars, Niels Löffler – bass and Dirk Meyer – Berhorn on drums) apparently helped out more than previously which may be why Ravenhead is such a quantum leap forward from their earlier material. Everything just seems so much more focussed and more cohesive. "More metal, more choruses, more Orden Ogan,"is how Levermann describes the album. This soundbite is clearly designed to get reviewers such as myself to bite but Ravenhead is pretty metal, has great big hulking choruses and represents a definite highlight in the career of Orden Ogan.
