It doesn't get much more old school sounding than With Serpents Scourge, the latest release from the French death metal trio known as Necrowretch. Vlad (guitars, vocals), Amphycion (bass), and Ilmar (drums) seem like they have just climbed out of their coffin after being buried since 1989, as the music here on With Serpents Scourge is just dripping with that early death metal charm. You know, cavernous, evil vocals, buzzsaw guitar riffs, frenzied solos, and primal drum blasting, the perfect recipe for any fan of vintage Death, Possessed, Morbid Angel, Dismember, and the like. The songs are dripping with claustrophobic production values, which totally adds to the pleasure factor for this reviewer. "By Evil and Beyond", "Bells of Evil Schism", and the lethal title cut bludgeon from start to finish, walking the fine line between brutal death metal and raw black metal, with Vlad's tortured growls sure to send a terrorizing chill up your spine.
For those with a taste for more melodic fare, With Serpents Scourge could very well be a chore, as the unrelenting nature of these songs can surely scare away the easily intimidated. However, fans of (and I hate to use the term again) old school death metal will find lots to enjoy on this monstrous platter of extreme metal brutality.
