As much music as I have been exposed to over the years, and as many bands as I actually can safely say that I 'like', there are just some that no matter how hard I try, that little magic 'spark' just doesn't seem to happen. UK grind legends Napalm Death are one of those bands. Don't get me wrong, these guys are as influential as it gets, and there's no denying their importance to the extreme metal scene over the last 30 years coupled with the fact that they've released a slew of top notch grindcore styled albums over that time span. It ain't my thing, but I can't deny what they bring to the table. All those familiar elements are here on Apex Predator-Easy Meat; lead vocalist Mark "Barney" Greenway is still spewing some intense hatred, the riffs of Mitch Harris are still unrelenting, and the manic rhythms of Danny Herrera & Shane Embury are as blistering and brutal as ever. This album just does not let up, with tracks like "Metaphorically Screw You", "Stubborn Stains", and "Cesspits" just so over the top manic they are sure to start up a violent mosh pit in a live setting. "Timeless Flogging" even has some serious groove to it, while "Stunt Your Growth" takes the opposite end of things and throttles your mind with brutal chaos in just a shade over two minutes. Most songs are in the 2-3 minute range, which is as long as they really need to be and fall into normal grind length. Honestly, despite the fact that this style of metal and this band aren't and never will be for me, I have to say this is a really solid album from Napalm Death. This is ferocious, unrelenting grind from legends of the scene, who show no signs of slowing down and seem to have plenty left in the tank.
