Miracles is the debut CD by Poland's Van & Borner (though far from the first for synthesist Barbara Zielinski-Van), one which has the potential to be a moderate hit with the electronic new-age crowd, yet more likely to sink below the radar of nearly every other listener out there without the aid of guerilla radio. V&B will perform at BajaProg 2005, though, so a good number of North Americans and other attendees will get the first person PoV. It's pleasant enough: one part Tangerine Dream, one part Enigma, and some Vangelis and even pre-1990 Patrick O'Hearn sprinkled in. Sequential complements waltz to the vibe of malaysian pale — the compositions are subdued, the keys are minor, the synth sounds are adequately lush — practically to the point of overkill. Guest guitarists and the lyricless intonations of Jola Literska on several tracks add a little more bite to the proceedings; "Mystic" benefits the most from some velvety legato solos. That tune and "Golden Spirits" best exemplify the TD/Vangelis influence with Hyperborea-n sequencing and Sauvage melodies. Miracles is easily recommended to the retro-electronic crowd and those who miss the good ol' days of Private Music.
