Agami, Al and Lone Selmer: Mind the Gap/Still Life

Al Agami has been recording in Denmark since 1993, mostly in the rap/dance genre. Lone Selmer is a Dutch jazz vocalist who has worked with many musicians adding vocal arrangements and choir but is now trying to forge her own career as a solo artist. You might ask yourself what does this have to do with progressive rock? This single consists of two songs, both originally done by the Dutch jazz fusion band Burnin Red Ivanhoe. In fact, two of the band members are featured here; Karsten Vogel (sax, keyboards) and Klaus Menzer (drums). Although I haven't heard Burnin Red Ivanhoe's music I can only assume they were going for a more commercial sound with this release.

The first tune, "Mind the Gap" is a smooth jazz flavoured soft rock affair with Agami's deep rich vocals contrasting with Selmer's jazzier voice. Their two voices are a nice fit that matches well with the romantic sax stylings and soulful groove.

Next up is "Still Life" which is much more rocking with superb drum work and excellent sax including a ripping solo. While this is quite sophisticated stuff, both songs are far removed from the progressive genre and that's okay. They just might generate some commercial appeal which can only be a good thing. Both tunes are quite catchy and easy to listen to and will satisfy music fans looking for something a little smoother and melodic. If you like to dabble in soft rock and melodic jazz, Mind the Gap/Still Life might go down smooth as silk.
