Bullhounds, The: Protector

The Bullhounds are a high energy rock band of veteran musicians who have delved into the work of various songwriters and have made a fairly decent rock album titled Protector. The band includes:

Peter Stroud – guitar (Sheryl Crow, Pete Droge & The Sinners)
Mauro Magellan – drums (Georgia Satellites, Dan Baird & Homemade Sin)
Rick Richards – guitar (Georgia Satellites, Izzy Stradlin)
Keith Christopher – bass (Keith & The Satellites, Dan Baird & Homemade Sin)
Erling Daell – vocals

This is about as pure a rock and roll album you are likely to hear this year. There is certainly a Georgia Satellites and Black Crowes' feel to some of the tracks. The songs are highlighted by old school rocking guitar riffs and the gravelly voice of Danish singer Erling Daell. If you enjoy the vocals of someone like George Thorogood you may appreciate his style. They are pretty rough and at first I wasn't sure but they are a good fit with the band's gritty approach to rock and roll. Songs like "Fugitive", "Make It" and "Mean Mean Girl" are simple rock tunes with that southern flair while "Little Lady" is a hell bent blues style rocker that will have you shuffling your feet.

The music is hard driving until the tender ballad "Moments" with its pretty acoustic rhythms and Hammond organ accents. Daell's vocals are pretty strained here but it's still an enjoyable listen.

The band saves the best for last with "Red Kroovy", a Stones' flavoured slow burner with tasteful Hammond and another pretty melody.

If you dig the pure rock and roll sounds of bands like The Stones, The Ramones and The Black Crowes, Protector might be an album to check out. Just be aware of the vocals as they will be an acquired taste.
