Misery Kills: My Ugly Insides

First of all, the cover art on this album is pretty great. The image, as you can see, shows a young woman applying makeup in a mirror. The only problem is that her reflection in the mirror looks nothing like the woman should; instead of beauty, there are darkened eyes and decaying skin. As a picture, it's a nice reminder that things aren't always as they seem. It's also a reminder that much of human activity is superficial and subject to decay.

Misery Kills (formerly as Misery) is a hardcore band out of New York. This is the first album released under the new name but is the band's third. The band is made up of John (vocals) and Joe LoCasto (bass), Corey Schaefer (guitar), Scott Borrero (drums), and Duane Conlon (guitar). Save for a peaceful opening track (more of a throat clearing than anything else), the tracks on this album fall squarely within a powerful version of hardcore. The band draws on influences like Sick of it All and Madball—and it shows. They also enjoy the sound of Pantera and Guns N' Roses. I can't say that the music here is just a combination of all those influences, but its pretty close. What I hear is hard-hitting music, brutal and aggressive, that pauses here and there for a melodic lead guitar passage or a solo run. John LoCasto's vocals especially suit the music on this album. He screams and shouts, sometimes he even sounds like he's bursting a lung. Overall, this is a strong release, worth a listen.
