Female fronted Southern blues rockers StoneWire hail not from the Deep South of the United States but on the other side of the Atlantic in the South East of England. When The Crow Flies is a big, brash and ballsy album that will win the band many admirers from fans of contemporary blues rock and for a debut effort is mightily impressive. Mixed by Voodoo Six bassist Tony Newton, the quarter have also enlisted the services of Pete Friesen (Alice Cooper/The Almighty) who has contributed additional guitar work to nine of the eleven tracks on the album.
With her vocal delivery shifting from husky and gritty to dynamic and powerful, Sky Hunter is the stand out performer on the album with lead single 'Favourite Bitch', 'Mama They'll Never Know' and the title track being amongst the highlights. The seven minute plus slow burner 'Fix You' is a fine way to cap off the album and whilst some of the influences are plain to hear there are enough original ideas here that evidences them as a band keen to develop their own style. Already having built a solid live reputation on the strength of some support shows with Michael Schenker's Temple of Rock, 2015 looks set to be a big year for StoneWire.
