Quadruple: Quadruple

With a history dating back to 1988 and seemingly cursed by lineup changes – although ex-Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force drummer Anders Johansson spent some time in the band – Sweden's Quadruple never got around to releasing an album until this year. Most of the 10 songs on this self-titled debut stem from 1997 writing and recording sessions – and they sound like it. Dark and grungy, these tunes have lots of grooves and hostile lyrics about society, religion and war. But the amateur vocals of Johnny Lungren keep Quadruple stuck in neutral. Gruff and plodding, Lundgren's delivery becomes monotonous, as do the songs' doomy pace and pissed-off intensity. The rare exception is the quasi-ballad "Bound to Crack," but even that gives the impression that Quadruple needs to break out of its singular vision.
