Pat Travers Band: Live at the Iridium NYC

Live! Go for What You Know, the 1979 live album from the Pat Travers Band, is obviously one of the most beloved hard rock live albums of all time, and here we are more than 30 years later with the current line-up of Travers' band delivering a worthy successor. Live at the Iridium NYC was recorded in New York City's Iridium Theater in February of 2012, just as Pat was set to launch his Can Do album for Frontiers Records. Joining the legendary guitarist/vocalist are Kirk McKim (guitar/vocals), Rodney O'Quinn (bass/vocals), and Sandy Gennaro (drums), with guest Jon Paris, who contributed blues harp on a few tunes.

Having personally seen this line-up of the Pat Travers Band live on the Can Do tour, I can tell you that they are firing on all cylinders, and this show at the Iridium is positively red hot. The setlist features some old Travers favorites as well as some blues covers, so there's a little something for everyone. Scorching versions of "Rock And Roll Suzie", "Gettin' Betta", "Crash and Burn", "Heat in the Street", and "I La La La Love You" show the guitarist ripping up some sizzling solos and still in fine form vocally, and while longtime fans might be disappointed that there is no "Boom Boom (Out Go the Lights)" or "Snortin' Whiskey" here, these old Travers classics more than satisfy. "Ask Me Baby" is a hard rocker from the Fidelis album, and we also see the band launch into the melodic "Josephine" from that same record. The blues covers of "Lone Wolf Red House", "I've Got News for You", "If I had Possession Over Judgement Day", and "Spoonful" are absolutely scorching, but it's their version of "Black Betty" that's the highlight of this set, a kicked up rendition that rivals the Ram Jam hit from 1977.

Ultimately this is a fiery live set that's proof positive that the Pat Travers Band can still deliver the goods on stage. If they happen to come to your neck of the woods make sure you pick up a ticket and experience it firsthand.
