Giles, Thomas: Modern Noise

Thomas Giles is best known under the name Tommy Rogers as the keyboard player and vocalist for Between the Buried and Me, a band which I have always been able to appreciate without ever really loving. I have to say that I have similar feelings towards Modern Noise. Fair play to Giles/Rogers though as he certainly puts some clear water between this material and that of his main band. At times Radiohead come to mind (quite a lot actually and I've never really appreciated them,) I also caught a Smashing Pumpkins kind of vibe on "Mutilated World" and "Siphon the Bad Blood".

Possibly the album works best on the more classic rock orientated tracks such as "I Appear Disappear" which has some tremendously laid back guitar noodling at its core. For me though, the best track is the opener, "Wise and Silent" which is reminiscent of the new Pink Floyd album in its ambient nature and lush soundscapes and I could have definitely have listened to a whole album in a similar vein. To his credit though Giles/Rogers moves around from genre to genre making this an intriguing listen.
