Nova: Il Ritorno

Check out the cover art on this album: It's a pretty straightforward image, a medieval knight, ready for battle, is surrounded by various fierce-looking creatures. I've always liked stuff like this, maybe because it reminds me of my childhood love of knights and castles and fair maidens. As for this picture, I'm not sure if it's taken from an actual medieval piece or not. Whatever the case, I like it.

The music on this album is mostly made up of extreme death metal played effectively. I say "mostly" because there are occasional interludes—tracks like "La Danza Delle Space" and "Il Ritorno" (for a moment)—that take listeners back to another age. These moments reminded me of the way Nile sometimes includes short instrumental tracks on their albums to keep things grounded in the theme of ancient Egypt. I would have enjoyed a few more of those intervals on this album, things like the fun and energetic "Outro."

On the whole, this album is fun to discover, but it sometimes feels like a death metal album with a few other tracks thrown in to give the music a bit of a thematic tie to the past. The problem, though, is that things feel like they need a little more of a frame, something to tie it all together.
