Lyriel: Skin And Bones

From Gummersbach, Germany comes gothic/symphonic metal band Lyriel. In the band are Jessica Thierjung (lead vocals), Linda Laukamp (cello, backing vocals), Tim Sonnenstuhl (guitars), Markus Fidorra (drums), Joon Laukamp (violin) and Oliver Thierjung (bass, backing vocals).

Skin And Bones is their follow up to Leverage, released in 2012. This is the band's fifth album.

This was a very pleasant end of the year surprise for this reviewer. If you enjoy the music of Nightwish, Epica and After Forever there should be plenty here to sink your teeth into. Thierjung's vocals are very pleasant and really quite sublime. I appreciate how she doesn't over sing the notes and always remains in complete control of her voice. Instead of keyboards Lyriel adds violin and cello which is a smart move. The strings work very nice with the heavier riffage and soft folky elements the band employs.

For heavy gothic/symphonic rock/metal check out the album's first three tracks; "Numbers", "Falling Skies" and the title track. Great riffs and vocals and wonderful violin and cello adding symphonic touches throughout. The band's folky side turns up on the dynamic "Black and White" where crunchy riffs and growling vocals contrast with mellower acoustic led sections. "Days Had Just Begun" continues the mellow trend with lovely strings and acoustic guitar while "Your Eyes" shifts between fast and slow tempos showcasing excellent musicianship.

The cover art and accompanying booklet is also professionally done, so it's certainly worth your while obtaining a physical copy.

Although this is not a groundbreaking achievement, Lyriel do what they do very well and have made a very good symphonic folk/metal album with Skin And Bones. If you are a fan of the genre you could do a lot worse. Released on AFM Records.

Lyriel: Skin And Bones
Posted by Dean Pedley, SoT Staff Writer on 2015-02-23 12:40:00
My Score:

Album number five from this gothic / symphonic / folk metal inspired band that feature the wonderful voice of Jessica Thierjung together with her fellow band mates Linda Laukamp (cello, backing vocals), Tim Sonnenstuhl (guitars), Markus Fidorra (drums), Joon Laukamp (violin) and Oliver Thierjung (bass, backing vocals). Energetic first single 'Numbers' leads off the album and with the Celtic inspired melodies ebbing and flowing with Jessica's breathless vocals against a backdrop of galloping riffs. Inevitably they are a band that will draw comparisons with Epica, Nightwish, Delain amongst others but there is definitely a spark about Lyriel that ensures they certainly deserve to be recognised alongside the aforementioned as innovators in what is an over-crowded genre.

Soothing violins usher in the ballad 'Days had just Begun' for what is a real stand out moment of the album and conjures up a powerful and dramatic atmosphere. Both cello and violin are used to some effect and they complement the traditional rock instrumentation well. There are two versions of 'Black and White', both of which pack a punch with an insistently catchy chorus and with the less commercial of the two including additional vocals (both clean and growls) supplied by Christian Älvestam. Definitely a band to watch out for, Skin and Bones is a terrific release.
