Gaeleri: Gates Of Rome

[gaeleri] is a melodic hard rock band from Sweden. They formed in 1992 and released three albums between 1996 and 2002. Due to limited commercial success the band broke up in 2004. Fast forward ten years to 2012 when [gaeleri] decided to give it another go. Their fourth album Gates Of Rome was released this fall.

This is a very good hard rock album with catchy riffs, strong lead vocals and solid musicianship. I wouldn't call this complex but it is very well played with some really nice melodies. "Ready Or Not" opens the album and is a fine slice of '80s style mid tempo hard rock. "Queen Of Time" carries a hint of Zeppelin in the main riff and is another solid mid tempo rocker. Whitesnake also came to mind. For something in the AOR vein, try the earworm inducing "Wannabe" and the ultra-catchy riffage of the title track where the band channels their inner Foreigner. "Let Your Love Bleed" is a fiery rocker with scorching guitar riffs while "One Step Closer" is pure melodic rock with a symphonic touch. The album ends with the anthemic "Time Has Come", another energetic rocker that closes the album in fine style.

Gates Of Rome is a solid rock album that will have fans of the '80s hard rock scene chomping at the bit. Solid riffs, excellent vocals and strong melodies throughout make Gates Of Rome one of the catchier rock albums I have heard this year.
