Swampborn: Alleged Escape

Alleged Escape finds the Russian duo Swampborn delivering their two track (and a hidden piece), yet 24 minute long debut of Black Metal and Pagan flavours, with Alt-Rock leanings. It's full on fare delivered with a serious level of vigour and attitude. Admittedly the heads down and roar of "Augoefides" and slightly less frantic "Mascarum" hardly offer up anything close to individual, however there's still no denying that what they do, they do well. Strings and percussion at the beginning of the second track certainly hint that this pair could begin to stretch out and provide a more substantial injection of ideas as time marches on. While the despair this track also delivers illustrates a keen ability to engage and challenge the listener.

Not the most ground breaking, or indeed eye catching of releases, but there's still enough about Swampborn to suggest that they are on the right track and may be worth watching; although adding a drummer to the mix would certainly offer more colour to the Black. As it is, Extreme Metal fans looking for a more obscure band to get in on early, won't be disappointed.
