Monster Magnet: Milking the Stars (A Re-Imagining of Last Patrol)

People call things psychedelic, but the word doesn't always describe exactly what people have in mind. But make no mistake; this album is often deeply psychedelic, especially at the beginning. Besides straight-up psychedelia, there's just a constant 60s vibe running through this thing, music generated by organs, Mellotrons, and clear, but haunting, vocals.

As the subtitle points out, this is a re-imagining of the band's album Last Patrol. The difference between the two albums is pretty significant. Yes, these are the same songs, but the mood is often completely different. In some ways, this re-imagining has a thicker, bolder, sound to it, one that pulls the band slightly out of their garage-rock ideals. I don't want to compare this thing track for track. Let's just say that I had a blast listening to this release and that I think others will too.

If I had one complaint about this album, it would be this: it drags a little bit here and there. I really enjoyed my time with this album, but would have preferred a slightly shorter trip. The last track, "I Live Behind the Clouds," however, is a winner.
