Pig Destroyer: Mass and Volume

I never took much time to discover Pig Destroyer's music. Grindcore, even if played well, has never had much appeal to me. I knew about the band—how could I forget a name like that?—and I knew that the last two albums were beloved by critics and fans alike. I even heard quite a bit of Book Burner playing over the speakers at a local record store. Despite one of the employees at the store telling me I definitely needed that album, I passed, having other interests that day.

For those who don't know, the music on this release actually dates back to the recording sessions for Phantom Limb. Instead of offering fans outtakes or demos or mediocre tracks, Pig Destroyer gives us two tracks of slowed-down, heavy doom. And it's awesome. The first track "Mass and Volume" is nearly 20 minutes of slow, heavy, gloom, soaked in feedback and growling vocals. As an avowed fan of doom metal, I could listen to this track all day. The second track "Red Tar" is also pretty good. It's shorter—only about 6 minutes—but it packs a punch and stays true to the slower, doomier, side of this release.

Mass and Volume shows off a different side of Pig Destroyer's sound, but it's a solid and essential release.
