Gormathon: Following the Beast

According to the band's promotional materials, a Gormathon is "a hybrid angel and fighter. It is the almighty unknown." Interesting description, though it's meaning is a bit unclear. It sounds like the Gormathon is a monster, but one whose intentions and desires are unknown, perhaps unknowable. Whatever it is, it's somehow beyond comprehension.

Fortunately, the music on this album is more accessible than the elusive Gormathon. Those who listen to this album will find it to be a blend of melodic death metal, thrash metal, and traditional metal. I thought the band was at their best at the introductions to each track. These guys start each track with a heavy riff, the kind that few metal heads can resist. The songs, however, tend to follow a very similar formula, one that transitions away from the heavy opening toward something much more melodic. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but the transition often takes the band's sound a bit further into melodic territory than it should. I'm thinking specifically of "Land of the Lost" and "Breaking the Chains" but other tracks could be identified as having the same kinds of problems. I admire the attempt to synthesize various metal influences here, but the result feels a little like there were too many ideas and influences at play here.
