From Denver, Colorado comes doom/sludge/stoner duo In the Company of Serpents (cool name), and their latest EP Merging in Light. Guitarist/vocalist Grant Netzorg and drummer Joseph Weller Myer have on display here three songs that rumble along with menacing intent, chock full of monstrous, dark riffs & plodding drums, in the end a really enjoyable homage to Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Electric Wizard, and Sleep. "Breed, Consume, Die" probably has the EPs most delicious riffing, as Netzorg unleashes one sizzling Tony Iommi inspired lick after another, and while "Third Mind" might be the least effective of the three tunes here, "A Union of Opposites" packs on the heroin induced atmosphere, as slow, crushing riffs pound the listener into submission and tortured vocals render you senseless. Merging in Light might not be reinventing the doom genre, but it's mighty fine at giving is all we love about slow, heavy, riff driven heavy metal.
