Dimension: Revolution

The progressive metal trio that is the Denver, Colorado group Dimension have a third album Revolution with thirteen tracks over not one but two CD's. This follows 2007's Ego 2007 and their debut Universal of 2002.

Dimension are a talented group with clean vocals, their music is powerful in parts and technical as Dimension perform an appealing style with lots of hardened riffs and they don't hesitate to mix it up some. Revolution is a strong progressive metal album, the only shortcoming is that it sounds a touch familiar sometimes. But then I'm probably just being picky as you could say that about so many other progressive metal groups, and unlike some of those Dimension don't sound like another Dream Theater or Symphony X tribute band. While Dimension's guitarist David Quicho features heavily the keys have their fair share also and are tastefully incorporated. Dimension put them to very good use on the lengthy progressive epic "War Dreams" a good song where they don't fail to retain your attention, but there are others that I do prefer. Such as "New Day" which is a slow but powerful number with such a moving feel, then there is the action packed progressive metal track "Resistance" and you can't go past their addictive instrumental "The End Of All Things" as Dimension cut loose with a masterful exhibition.

Dimension have also included two covers, one of the classic Beatle's track "Eleanor Rigby" that is quite well done, but for my money the excellent heavy version recorded in 1970 by the Australian pop/rock band Zoot with Rick Springfield on guitar/vocals is yet to be surpassed. Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" is the other, both enjoyable but not essential listening more so serving as brief extras, And really there's more than ample playtime with Dimension's original material on their new double album Revolution.
