Bastard Feast: Osculum Infame

First off, this album came out back in July and I'm only getting to it now. I try to review things within a smaller window of time but it doesn't always happen. Still, I listen to everything that comes my way and try to say a few words about most of it.

As for Bastard Feast, this band hails from Portland, Oregon and will be known to some as the new name for the former band Elitist. I never listened to Elitist but I sure like what Bastard Feast is doing. This album is basically black metal performed with a strong touch of hardcore. When the band is at its best, things move along with energy and passion, just the things that make for an interesting listening experience. I was impressed with several songs on this album, mostly "Fields of Black Cancer" and "The Rat Through Our Veins." Interested listeners should also check out "Synthetic Messiah," a long and fascinating track that takes on an almost ambient / post-metal quality. Don't worry, it's still as dark as extreme metal should be.

On the whole, this is a solid release from a very promising band. Highly recommended.

One more thing: my press materials show a different track listing than my digital copy of the album. I apologize if I've really made a mess of things by recommending the wrong tracks. I feel confident that my track listing is the right one but I guess you never know.

Track Listing:
1. Bloated City
2. The Serpent Spoke
3. Fields of Black Cancer
4. A Tribute to What We Stole
5. Synthetic Messiah
6. Noose of Smoke
7. Old Father
8. Watchful Defiler
9. Claustrophobic of this World
10. The Rat Through Our Veins
