Drone: Drone

Hailing from Germany is the Metal band, Drone, who has released their 4th CD, this time simply called Drone, on Metalville Records. This quartet's brand of Metal is a powerful, modern edged one that is in your face with attitude throughout all 12 songs (with 2 bonus tracks!) on this record.

Drone start off this record with a quaint little acoustic guitar interlude that runs headlong into a chugging, staccato Metal riff that takes this opening track, "Guilt", over the top. Heavy and unexpected, Drone have now got your attention, that is for sure. Manic double bass drums from hell are what this opening song thrusts at you with reckless abandon and without mercy. This is an absolute stand out track, as is the next track, "The Reason", which keeps the heavy moving along in an excellent way. Fans of bands like Gojira or Trivium should find a home with Drone. There are many twin lead guitar breaks much in the vain of Trivium and the almost trademarked Gojira quirky riffage finds its way into a song or 2 on here, as well. No plagiarism here, just, I'm sure a little homage being played to the great French band. Check out their song, "Buried In Blue" for a Gojira type of one handed hammer on riff in the bridge and outro, it's awesome!

Vocals are raspy with the obligatory Metal growls and shouting, which are really used for good measure, but there is a lot melody to the choruses that lend themselves well to the vocal delivery. Drone are for sure a guitar, riff heavy band with some heavy drumming to push the pace and drive the Metal point home, for sure. And the overall production of the record is great, which just adds to the heaviness of the band. There is even an acoustic ballad of sorts, "Hung and Over", but the lyrics do leave something to be desired, which kind of ruins the effort.

Drone have a pretty solid Metal record here in their self-titled, 4th album. Metal fans should enjoy the Pantera like, sledgehammer approach with a few Rock n Roll cliché lyrics (see the song "Rock 'N' Rollercoaster"). This a good sounding record that is a fun and heavy listen.
