Sterile Jets: Liqour Store

Sterile Jets hail from Long Beach, California and formed a few years back. Their debut Barlights At 2 AM was released in 2013. Their new album Liquor Store has now it the shelves. The band members are Williams "B. Ill" Partnoff (bass, vocals), Bly (guitar, vocals) and Mathew Bean (drums).

This is the kind of music I used to listen to often in my younger days. Punk inspired heavy rock with an energetic, off the cuff sound that is really more noise than actual 'music'. This isn't meant as an insult, just an observation. The fuzz laden, distortion derived guitar riffs churn in unexpected directions creating a chaotic collage of noisy sound that you will probably dig if you like your music intense and a little loose around the edges. Complementing the heavy riffs and pulverizing drum beats are the shouted lead vocals. Gruff and rough sounding, this will definitely be an acquired taste. At first I was a little unsure but they really do suit the music.

Songs like the doomy "Alt Rock Is A Coma", my personal favourite, the powerful "Bender. Day 15" with its huge angular guitar riffs and loosely styled intermittent jams and the album opener "…to the Bars" where surf music meets distorted doom rock, will surely get your blood boiling if nothing else. If you have ever imagined what 'garage rock' sounds like I think Sterile Jets come as close as any band I have heard in an awfully long time. A well-deserved 3 stars.
