D'Agostino, Peppino: Penumbra

Contemporary fingerstyle guitar virtuoso, Peppino D'Agostino, on his latest release, Penumbra, has managed to become a sort of a self contained guitar orchestra with his awe-inspiring technique on the steel string acoustic. He condenses a lovely sense of the melodic while comprising a masterful technique throughout Penumbra that is simply nothing short of brilliant. The 12 tracks on this album are either compositions by some of his personal favorite composers or original material that was written for people that are close to him and each and every composition and performance is quite breathtaking!

Mr. D'Agostino's majestically flows from influence mixtures of Celtic, Brazilian and Italian, while also forging ahead with the contemporary classical guitar styling's and destroys the long standing debate of "classical or fingerstyle" guitar. The amazing technique and composition of the tune "Irican", written by Gyan Riley, is flawlessly performed and the beautiful and soulful original composition of "Sergio" is just a taste of what a guitar can sound like in the hands of a master.

Penumbra is perfectly split in half with 6 original compositions and 6 written by some of Mr. D'Agostino's favorite players, with each track expertly performed with a wonderful grace and elegance. This is a wonderful trip into the Contemporary Classical guitar world and I found myself listening to this CD in its entirety, 3 times in a row! This is an utterly beautiful and spectacularly executed album that I found to be uplifting and mesmerizing. Mr. Peppino D'Agostino has a wonderful piece of art on his hands here with Penumbra and I can not tell you how much I enjoyed it.
