Laugh at the Fakes: Dethrone the Crown

This band certainly has a unique name. I'm not sure I like it; it reminds me too much of the polarizing kind of talk I remember from high school. I suppose the name could be ironic, a nod to the constant worry over which bands represent true "cvlt" status and which ones don't. Still, the idea of taking on the role of the bully—the person doing the laughing—leaves me a bit cold.

This album is the band's first full-length release. They did put out an EP back in 2011 and this album is their follow-up to that.

The music here, as is so often the case these days, is slightly hard to categorize. The way around this problem is to create lists of bands that are similar. In this case, the band points to relatively recent bands like Avenged Sevenfold as well as classic acts like Judas Priest, Megadeth, and others. What I hear is a curious mixture of aggressive metal, melodic metal, and something thrashy about the songs. The result is actually pretty engaging.

I like this band because I never know quite what to expect. The band isn't breaking new ground, but they are doing interesting things with their materials. Particularly interesting are the slightly high-pitched and melodic vocals. There's almost a Triumph-like vibe at work here (remember Triumph?).

I think that fans of classic metal played with a contemporary twist will enjoy this one.

The title track—"Dethrone the Crown"—is well worth a listen. "Killing Time" is also very strong.
