Necrophagia: WhiteWorm Cathedral

Yes, the lack of spacing between "White" and "Worm" is supposed to be there. I checked and then checked again. I'm not sure what the significance of these words combined could be; the closest horror reference I can think of is to Bram Stoker's novel The Lair of the White Worm.

For those who aren't familiar with the long and winding career of Necrophagia, check out the band's Wikipedia page. It provides a pretty good overview and will certainly help everyone put the band into a larger context. Simply put, these guys have been around since the early 80s. They were pioneers of extreme death metal and weren't afraid of mixing a fascination with gore and horror movies into the music. Since 1983 there have been quite a few lineup changes, but the current version of the band has been releasing albums for a little while.

This album, though long-delayed, is finally out. It's pretty good overall—a straightforward mix of death metal songs that are heavy on sound clips from various horror movies. I though the band sounded strong overall; the vocals are consistently dark and menacing and the guitars mostly churn out some powerful and catchy riffs. I won't call it a comeback, but the album is a strong offering from a legendary band. Check out "Rat Witch" and "Elder Things."
