According to the good folk at Naplam Records Liv Kristine's fifth solo album," unfolds as a dark rock masterpiece assembling terrific melodies, enthralling song structures and a world class voice – all captured in an incomparable premium sound." I'm not in full agreement as I think Vervain suffers (if that is the correct word) from the same "problem" that almost all of Kristine's solo work and her efforts with Leaves' Eyes, namely a lack of immediacy in the material. That's not to say that her work isn't without merit – far from it but Liv Kristine doesn't do by-the-numbers pop, oh no there's generally depth to her work and Vervain is no exception to the rule.
Arguably Vervain is a return to Kristine's roots as here she mines a seam of gothic, often doom-laden metal which hits a bit of a peak on "Stronghold of Angels" where Doro turns up to add a nice counterpoint to Kristine's more operatic style. It's pleasing for once to hear Pesch stray outside pure metal territory. This is one of those albums which can't be reviewed in a short space of time due to its multi-layered depths so you may have to check back for a definitive score in a few months.
