Gallagher, Rory: Irish Tour '74-40th Anniversary (2CD)
Here's an unmissable treat for fans of the much missed Irish Blues guitarist Rory Gallagher and a treat for those who merely love great music. Released in various formats this is a veritable treasure trove of fabulous songs and even better playing featuring a number of previously unreleased versions of Gallaher standards. At the time, Northern Ireland was going through a period of political turmoil and devastating violence euphemistically called the Troubles. However, while the live music scene was non-existent at that time because of the societal violence, Gallagher was willing to tour. His reasoning: "Kids still live here."
The two disc version is chock filled with classics – Gallagher's work on "Tattoo'd Lady" is utterly sublime and arguably the whole band are at their peak on the wonderful "Walk On Hot Coals". Gerry McAvoy (bass), Rod De'ath (drums) and Lou Martin (keys) provide suitably muscular but sympathetic accompaniment throughout and one can only wonder at how splendid it must have been to see this quartet in the flesh. Fortunately we have the various versions of this package to remind us of a great, great talent.
