Fobos: Fobos

Fobos are a melodic progressive rock band from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and we have here their self-titled debut album. The band is comprised of Bruno Caamano (bass, backing vocals, drums, Spanish guitar, minimoog), Pablo Cordes (electric guitars, vocals, drums, piano, Mellotron), and Baty Tutaglio (numerous keyboards). This is lush, melodic, romantic styled prog, firmly rooted in classic South American as well as Italian progressive rock from the '70s, complete with layers of vintage keyboard sounds, tasty guitar solos, tricky rhythms, and Spanish vocals. Just listen to those wonderful Moog passages on the engaging "Hay Luz", or that haunting Mellotron & mournful piano on the lovely "Mi Oscuro Fantasma"...there's some really beautiful stuff going on here. "Angel de La Guarda" reminds of a cross between classic Genesis and PFM, and the truly wonderful "Gran Senor Tretas" will send chills up and down the spine of any vintage prog lover with all the fantastic Mellotron, Moog, Hammond organ, and biting guitar solos flying about the mix. Lead vocals are in Spanish, so unless you speak the language much of the lyrical content will be going over your head, but the vocals are very well done throughout.

Most of the album has a certain 'dreamy' feel to it, so don't expect a lot of rocking out here, instead the band opt for a more pastoral, romantic style. A few aggressive guitar solos do pop up from time to time, like on "Vuelta Atras", as Cordes battles the huge waves of Mellotron with his sizzling licks, but overall this is a really enjoyable slice of modern South American prog with a clear nod to the greats of the '70s. Gotta love that cool cover art too!
