Lordi: Scare Force One
It is quite easy to dismiss Lordi so here goes – they're KISS-obsessed wannabes who fluked a win in the much reviled (in the UK) Eurovision Song Contest and therefore can't be taken seriously. Secondly, they are sub-GWAR monster-loving copycats/plagiarists. Let's have a look at the accusations shall we? Well, unlike GWAR, Mr Lordi and his cohorts can most certainly construct memorable tunes as evidenced by practically all the proper tunes (ie not "SCG7: Arm Your Doors And Cross Check", "Amen's Lament To Ra II" or "Sir, Mr. Presideath, Sir" ) on Scare Fore One and this is the key reason behind their sustained success especially on mainland Europe. Yes, they do indeed a similar mine of pop metal like the mighty KISS but they keep mostly to horror tropes as opposed to partying every night and day and what they do, they do very well.
Finnish veteran producer Mikko Karmila replaces Michael Wagener behind the production desk, a move which according to Mr Lordi leaves the band with, "no regrets." He goes on to say, "The overall sound of the band is more modern, too, and we've tried out some new tricks here and there. The basic Lordi building blocks are still present, so there's no shortage of melodic hooks in the songs. The first single, Nailed by the Hammer of Frankenstein, is quite representative of where the band is right now." "Nailed by the Hammer of Frankenstein" isn't necessarily the most obvious track as lead single as it is one of Lordi's heaviest tunes to date but possibly in terms of atmosphere Scare Force One is Lordi's darkest, least comical albums thus far. Certainly "She's A Demon" maintains this although many of the earlier songs such as the title track, or "Cadaver Lover" have the pristine pop sheen associated with the band. Only time and the success or otherwise of the album will determine where Scare Force One stands with the band's canon but if you like Lordi you'll definitely enjoy this.

Lordi: Scare Force One Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2014-11-22 07:50:48 My Score:
I have to say I've never quite jumped on the Lordi bandwagon, but truth be told this latest release Scare Force One boasts plenty of enjoyable hard rock fare that's not too far removed from what we'd expect from say KISS, Rob Zombie, or Alice Cooper. The vocals of Mr. Lordi have never been the strong point of the band, and that's still the case here, but damn if the guitar riffs from Amen don't just grab you by the throat on tracks such as "How to Slice a Whore", "Cadaver Lover", "Scare Force One", and the manic "Nailed By the Hammer of Frankenstein". There's also some well placed, spooky keyboards on the heavy "The United Rocking Dead" as well as on the melodic "She's a Demon", both of which could have been outtakes from any of the more recent Alice Cooper albums.
All in all, Scare Force One is a pretty fun and rocking album from this costumed outfit, showing that they've got songwriting skills to back up the eye popping image.
