Deshody: Collapsing Colors
There's a faint whiff of old school thrash about the straight up metalcore Italian's Deshody demonstrate on their debut outing Collapsing Colors, although more in the approach and vibe of what they create, rather than in the end product itself. However unlike most metalcore acts Deshody eschew the clean guitar and vocal choruses in favour of a consistent full on assault of guitars and gutturals. Initially this go for the throat, unwillingness to compromise hits hard, however across eleven tracks things simply lack dynamics and character, one song blending far too neatly into another.
Vocalist Domenico Gesmundo is a convincing throat shredder, his unbridled energy coming through thick and fast, while Giovani Sanna and Domenico Paesano grind out a collection of gargantuan guitar attacks. Yet by the time you're halfway through Collapsing Colors, you already have half a mind on just how much more of this unbending, unyielding fare you can take. "History Of Legion" does offer a little variance, a more brooding mood achieved, while standout track "Calypso" and its staccato punch leaves a strong mark on the mind. However if you put this album on shuffle, then you'd be hard pushed to decipher the difference between "Each Of Us Lives", "The Apple (Break The Pact)", or "Memory Lapses". That doesn't make any of these bad songs – in fact far from it – just lacking in any real standout from the crowd qualities.
As debuts go, Collapsing Colors illustrates that Deshody have the chops to deliver the goods, however to do so while shining brighter than the many other purveyors of these oft repeated sounds, well that's another matter.
