Amity in Fame: Through

Amity in Fame is an acoustic rock band from Austria who are doing something a little different. If a mostly acoustic album can sound 'heavy' then their latest release Through fits the bill. Their debut Dinner For One was released in 2008.

In the band are Michael Bichler (vocals), Filip Hörschläger (guitar, vocals), Roman Mayrhofer (bass), Alex Zaus (keys, vocals) and Wilfried Wöss (drums).

Besides being very good musicians; the playing, arrangements and songwriting is outstanding and even though Through is a song based album this music has an underlying eclecticism that should appeal to fans of progressive rock.

The first track "Good Night And Shut Up" features crystal clear acoustic guitar, deep bass and somewhat gritty lead vocals with nice harmonies as well. If these were electric guitars I could imagine Metallica doing something like this. The next track "When It Comes To An End" is one of my favourites on the disc. The acoustic guitar/bass intro is clean with subtle effects giving the sound a spacey feel. The lead vocals, both male and female, are excellent and compliment the somewhat ethereal mood of the piece and although keyboards are not listed there is an orchestral element here. In "Shine", the acoustic guitar intro with synth-like effects is very cool and atmospheric while "Saint" is a short number with a melancholic tone and expressive lead vocals. One of the best things about this album are the guitar and bass tones which often add a surreal and space-like effect. "Cyranoia" is another great track with heavy acoustic rhythms, passionate vocals and psychedelic influenced electric guitar.

Through is an album that completely passed me by when it was released in 2012. Thanks to Graviton Music Services that oversight has now been remedied. If you dig your music on the moodier side of melancholy and appreciate acoustic rock in general there should be plenty here to sink your teeth into. Reference points may include Opeth's Damnation and Pain Of Salvation's 12:5. Recommended.
