Lurking Corpses, The: Workin' for the Devil

After a six year break, The Lurking Corpses bring fans a new album. And it's a long one: there's nearly an hour of Misfits / Samhain-inspired punk, heavy rock, and heavy metal on this album. The music, as many will know is largely horror-centered but with a twist. Instead of playing up human and supernatural atrocities (like Cannibal Corpse might do), these guys maintain a tongue-in-cheek distance to the whole thing. The Lurking Corpses are the kind of band you'd want to at a Halloween attraction, the kind where long lines require extra entertainment. I don't mean that critically; this is entertaining and funny stuff. The band members wear cool masks with fangs and stuff.

Most of the songs on this album follow a predictable pattern: first, take a sound clip from a horror film and play it for about 30 seconds. Second, play a straightforward song that either develops the idea from that clip. Third, return to the clip or move over to another clip. The result is not so much a predictable mess, but a fun romp through old-school horror via old-school punk. I especially liked "The Leech and the Worm," "Lady Frankenstein," and "In Hell (I Wait for You)." I also thought the cover of Slayer's "Tormenter" was solid.

If you like this style of music, you'll probably enjoy this album.
