Calm Hatchery: Fading Reliefs
Calm Hatchery's third full-length delivers nothing but hard-hitting technical death metal. Fans of Nile, Immolation, and other bands like them will certainly find plenty to enjoy. More importantly, though, the band members are pushing themselves in new directions, adding even more advanced musical passages and reaching more and more toward a sound of their own. I was especially drawn to the highly technical guitar passages and the rough, growled, vocals. I'm usually most critical of death metal vocals, but I thought they sounded great on this release, a perfect complement to the music they support.
My favorite track was the lengthy "The Eternal Cycle." Not all bands can pull of longer songs, but this track worked quite well. The theme—death and what may (or may not) happen afterwards—captures the mystery and the menace of human endings. The music supported these ideas quite nicely. Again, much of the strength came from the guitars; several musical passages feature repeated melodic lines that underscore the mood of the song effectively. I could go on about most of the guitar parts on this album. They are consistently strong and interesting, never simply repeated scale tones but musical lines that keep things moving and interesting.
Check out "Blessing of Mantra," "Bomben Uber Warschau," and the aforementioned "The Eternal Cycle." This is a killer new release.
