Myrkur: Myrkur

Myrkur is a new black metal act that is quickly gathering momentum, Myrkur's eerie debut release is a self-titled EP, an EP with seven tracks that is. Myrkur is the work of a sole female artist from Denmark and adding an air of mystery the details of its creator seem very limited. Though what I did find was that besides black metal she does take inspiration from nature with its beauty and harshness a contrast which is reflected on this EP, and also early Norse folk music. Myrkur doesn't sound crystal clear like the latest album from say Dimmu Borgir, as Myrkur's production is not that refined which suits Myrkur's ever so haunting material with the odd hiccup along the way. That more natural sound really enhances the feel of this release increasing the magnetism.

Vocally Myrkur has a limited sinister input as the majority are appealing melodious single and layered clean female vocals. The music on Myrkur ranges from intense inclusions with programmed drum blasts and express guitar work to hefty slower riffs, then there is quite peaceful times intertwined with a darkened atmospheric feel, actually the Icelandic word for 'darkness' is in fact 'Myrkur'. I was close to awarding this release four stars but it's not without its flaws. I have already mentioned some glitches in the sound above, and I wouldn't object to having an actual drummer performing next time as the drums on this EP sound a notch above adequate at best. But hey Myrkur is a debut release after all and one that I have been spinning regularly and will continue to do so.
