Disasterhate: Mirroring the Abyss

Here's a debut album from Disasterhate, an Italian metal band comprised, as the promo materials tell us, of "three determined girls and a drummer." Sounds like a sitcom. The album title, Mirroring the Abyss, is meant to reflect the endless craziness and infinite variety of the human mind.

Right from the start, the title "Me=Android" caught my attention. I've been reading quite a bit lately about posthuman theory and I liked the idea of thinking about androids, selfhood, and so on. You know: the usual kinds of questions science fiction raises all the time. I also watched a portion of a Korean film called Doomsday Book about a robot that becomes a very self-aware Buddhist monk. That movie really got me thinking. When I saw the title "Me=Android," then, I was excited by the thematic unity of all my recent activities. Granted, the lyrics to "Me=Android" are pretty hard to understand and I didn't look them up. This is extreme metal, after all, not the sort of stuff that lends itself to easily-understood articulations.

As for the album, I liked its hard-driving qualities. This band clearly wants to demonstrate their skill at grabbing listeners' attention and not letting go. Most of the tracks on this album offer the kind of pound and drive that makes for a good live show. This is riffy, heavy, music, the perfect stuff for certain kinds of moods and activities.
