Spanish band Kilmara return to the scene with their third album Love Songs and Other Nightmares which is produced by Masterplan's (and former Helloween) guitarist Roland Grapow - the band travelled to Grapow's Slovakian studio to make the album and overall the trip was worthwhile. Guitarist John Portillo explain's, "If our preceding record was something like a tribute to bands like Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Scorpions or Helloween themselves, in this new album our references are Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet for my Valentine." I'm not sold by this explanation by any means and hear very little Avenged Sevenfold nor BFMV but I do hear a lot of classic rock/metal on offer.
The playing can't be faulted and as one might expect the six-string work is particularly impressive and much of the album features galloping Steve Harris style bass lines which keeps the band right on the edge of power metal. Vocalist Christian Wolfgang Kohl's deep range enables the band to avoid the high-pitched clichés which afflict much of the genre, however, occasionally (as on "The Break Up")he sounds like he's working on a different song but overall this is a more than solid release which I suspect will find favour throughout Europe especially.
