Austria's blackened death metal merchants Belphegor have been one of the most consistent acts on the extreme metal scene for so many years now you kind of almost take for granted just how good they are. Their latest release from Nuclear Blast, Conjuring the Dead is a perfect example of a band at the top of their game. From start to finish, Conjuring the Dead contains one deliciously brutal track after track, with kick ass guitar riffs bludgeoning the listener and evil vocal growls blaspheming all over the place. "Gasmask Terror" and the pummeling title track are so well crafted and so heavy, while "In Death" simply rampages, complete with terrific riffs and pounding drums. At the helm as always is Helmuth, the creator of all these riffs and growler extraordinaire, who turns everything he touches to molten gold. The guy puts on a clinic throughout "Legions of Destruction", easily a death metal classic in the making, but then again you could say that for just about any song here. This is evil, evil stuff, but it's what we've come to expect from Belphegor, a band that just knows how to create killer extreme metal that always sounds fresh, exciting, and yeah, plenty brutal.
Basically, if you don't have Conjuring the Dead in your death metal collection by now, you need to take care of that problem immediately.
