Khthoniik Cerviiks: Heptaedrone TAPE
Cassettes are back—at least that's what I'm told. In a world where everyone wants to be as original as possible, why not turn back to a format that has seemingly died? I had a huge tape collection; lots of metal fans did. For many listeners, tape trading was central to discovering new metal bands and increasing our collective understanding of the genre.
So here we are, tape in hand, ready to discover something new. In this case, the band is Khthoniik Cerviiks, a blackened death metal band from Germany. With this, their debut release, the band is hoping to make a strong impression and to generate interest. I've heard lots of releases by underground metal bands and I usually admire each band's willingness to push themselves hard and to create blistering music in a very crowded music industry. Few of these bands will make it into the big leagues; many of them are probably just hoping to have a good time and to make a little money on the side.
Those who listen to this release will find it to be quite good. These guys not only play fast, but they play with the kind of extreme qualities that we hope to find in bands like this. Instead of being just another extreme metal band, these guys seem to have discovered that sweet spot, the one that gives their music a little bit more of an edge. From start to finish, these guys sound strong and bring their best material forward. I could have done without the first track, one of those throat-clearing exercises meant to set the tone more than anything else. Once things get going, though, things sound great. Fans of this style will definitely want to check out "Black Hole Neurotransmission" and "Moraines of Molten Light." "The Grand Sidereal Swindle" and "Elektriik Redeemer" were also strong. Check these guys out.
