Ommadon: V

For those unfamiliar with Ommadon, they are a UK-based doom / drone duo. Though made up of only two people—David Tobin (guitars) and Ewan Mackenzie (keyboards, drums)—the band produces loud, depressing, and big music. I generally enjoy drone music and was fascinated with the way the guys were able to stretch things out to almost ninety minutes. Although it can be difficult to listen to songs that go on for so long, it is nevertheless impressive to follow the minimalist structures and the slowly moving notes. I especially like it when the drums come in and add some much-needed beats (and variety) to the overall mood.

The purpose of doom / drone, is not necessarily to hold on to the listeners attention the whole time. Instead, music like this has the ability to invoke feelings, thoughts, and moods. On this album, the music is heavy and crushing, almost overwhelming at times. Were it not for the drums, the sonic force of the guitars would be slightly hard to bear.

This is a good release, one that fans of this style should enjoy. The only thing I wish this band would do differently is add some vocals to the mix. No, I'm not talking about vocals that perform lyrics. I'm talking about atmospheric vocals, the kind that adds layers to the music and gives things a slightly more nuanced quality. For those unfamiliar with doom / drone, this may be as good a place as any to discover something new.
