Here's a reissue of the debut album from one- man black metal act Colosus, also known as Krhudd, the drummer from Sidious. Now out on CD & cassette through Kaotoxin Records (it was originally a digital only release), the atmospheric, dark ambient black metal sounds of Blestem can now be enjoyed by a wider audience though multiple formats. Eight tracks of torment, desolation, and violence is the best way to describe what's on display here, and for fans of the many one-man black metal projects out there (Xasthur, Leviathan, Burzum, etc) this will be an intriguing listen. Agonizing vocal rasps, cold atmosphere created by a wealth of keyboard sounds, pummeling blast beats, haunting chants, and passages of brutal guitar thunder all encompass the full collection of sounds that appear here. Many of these tracks are quite creepy & chilling ("La apus" instantly comes to mind) and Krhudd's tortured wailing at times is enough to send shivers up and down your spine. "Red Snow" is especially brutal, but beautifully so, and the engaging closer "Pustiu" is a great example of how to combine the fury of black metal with the more tranquil, atmospheric aspects of the genre.
Blestem is not one of those black metal records that's going to bash you over the head with instant savagery & aggression, but with its many moments of light & shade, evil & beauty, and menace & tranquility, the album constantly keeps you on your toes and takes you through many mood swings, tempos, colors, and flavors. Job well done.
