Libertino, Christopher: Traveller

Christopher Libertino has composed over fifty film scores so he is no stranger to the music business. During the last few years he started working on what was to become his first solo album Traveller, which was released in 2012. Libertino plays all the instruments himself including bass, guitar, keyboards, drum programming and lead vocals. He also did the mixing, recording and cover art making this truly a one man band.

The music is very mellow with lots of textural elements used to build the sound in a very subtle way. Often the guitars are kept at a distance, sounding muted and never brash or in your face. The keyboards add a certain amount of colour and smoothness to the sound. There are no wild solos here but rest assured the playing is tasteful and melodic. Libertino's soft vocal delivery, at times eerily similar to Bryan Ferry, matches well with the album's laid back sound so no complaints in that department. The first album that came to mind for comparison was Roxy Music's Avalon. Other reference points would be the mellower sides of Peter Gabriel and David Bowie.

If you enjoy art rock like latter period Roxy Music or Bryan Ferry solo, Traveller might be an album you should check out.
