Phi: Now The Waves Of Sound Remain

Austrian progressive rock band Phi are Markus Bratusa (vocals, guitars, programming), Arthur Darnhofer-Demár (bass, vocals) and Gabe Cresnar (drums). The band formed in 2006 and released their debut For The Love Of Ghosts in 2011. Now The Waves Of Sound Remain is their third release.

I know I have stated this before but it never ceases to amaze me just how much excellent music is being produced these days. Phi are an up and coming young band with plenty of chops to play with the big boys in the progressive rock/metal genre but are really followers of no one. They have a pretty distinct sound but if I were to compare them to anyone it would have to be Tool and maybe a bit of Porcupine Tree. The changing tempos and cool riff progressions sometimes have a Tool feel and the more atmospheric mellower sections might appeal to fans of Porcupine Tree.

"Buy Your Piece Of Love" starts with gentle guitar over a Floydian soundscape. The vocals are excellent with nary a hint of accent, very warm sounding with a nice tone. The riffs get heavier before returning to moodier guitar work. Tool-like rhythmic parts and a strong vocal performance make up the exciting "Welcome Tomorrow" while "Tune In Zone Out" features a tricky chord progression and cool sig changes. One of my favourite pieces is "Behind A Veil Of Snow" with the guitar having an Eastern bent eventually taking on an almost doom-like heaviness.

Now The Waves Of Sound Remain is an excellent release from a band clearly on the rise. Hopefully they can continue to put out quality material in the years ahead. A Gentle Art Of Music release.
