Sunburst; The: Tear Off The Darkness

There really does appear to be a thriving Rock scene in Italy right now, with everything from Prog specialists to Power Metal and Thrash acts coming through. However with a slightly more "modern" sound, The Sunburst still arrive as a little bit of a surprise - and quite a pleasant one at that. The likes of Avenged Sevenfold, or a slightly more Grungey Shinedown are evoked, however I'd actually offer an updated Freak Of Nature as the closest comparison for this talented four-piece.

"Follow Me" makes for a convincing opening, a solid, thick riff introducing a song which rolls along on a chunky, involving groove, as vocalist Davide Crisafulli proves a capable vocal counterpoint, especially when allowed the room to illustrate his impressive range. Things do feel a little repetitive in places, and considering that Tear Off The Darkness doesn't even quite run to 35 minutes, that could be seen as a bit of a worry, even though in truth it doesn't stop each of the eight tracks having some merit. "Something Real" pulls back on the aggression, offering instead a hard hitting atmosphere and sharp guitar solo, while "Rising" proves that the slow build, then hit them over the head with a killer riff illustrated elsewhere, really can be a winning formula when carried out with this amount of conviction. Just about letting the side down, but not quite, the slower, acoustic driven and slightly Almighty like "Another Day" kind of floats past without really suggesting it is a song you'll be remembering, although the down-tuned roar of "Left Behind" certainly doesn't lack in the well worth revisiting stakes.

As debut albums go, there's a lot to like and recommend on Tear Off The Darkness and while there are maybe slightly too many tried and tested ideas relied on to get their message across, what The Sunburst have to say is still well worth taking note of.
