Monuments: The Amanuensis

Now this is an album packing its share of heavyweight material, that was recorded by a metal group who call themselves Monuments. Monuments' perform complex progressive/djent metal with an addictive grooving heavy edge. Monuments are returning with a second release The Amanuensis, featuring their new vocalist Chris Barretto (ex-Periphery, Ever Forthright).

Various clean and the obligatory aggressive vocal styles are utilised on The Amanuensis, with music that is technical and lively, and featuring very sound performances. I really like the music on this album but despite this I do have mixed feelings about The Amanuensis, and I certainly wouldn't be eager to rush out and purchase a copy. The musicianship is excellent as you would expect on such an album as this isn't the easiest kind of music to play, but those hostile vocal combinations which I'm normally a fan of do act as a detraction from the band's appeal and individuality, and could be cut back. A song like "I, The Creator" shows so much promise then they just totally killed that appeal with the vocals and so it goes on. I'm sure there are countless others who would feel the opposite, but this isn't one for me.
